All rails
The constraint is not instruments. It is second parties.
What more of your own instruments buy
- Camera 1, your gateAn instrumentreachable Measured (V2)
- Camera 2, your yardA second instrument, the same partystill Measured (V2)
- Camera 3, your weighbayA third instrument, the same partystill Measured (V2)
- The supplier’s docketA second partyreachable Measured and confirmed (V3)
More instruments of your own buy none of it as a tier lift. They buy:
- Coverage: a figure that did not exist now exists.
- Precision: a narrower band.
- Continuity: events nobody was there for are witnessed.
V3 is the ceiling data reaches. V4-L or V4-R is a practitioner’s conclusion: more instruments can make an engagement shorter, never the conclusion.
The eight rails
| Rail | What it is | Who can own it | Adds a second party | What an ordinary person does | Specialist | Best tier it can help reach | What it cannot do |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| R1 Documents | Invoices, delivery notes, dockets, certificates | Yours, a counterparty’s or a third party’s | Sometimes | Forward the email or drop the file in a folder | No specialist | Up to Two parties agree (V1) | A document is an assertion by whoever wrote it, and two documents from one party are one opinion. |
| R2 Systems | The ERP, the accounts-payable ledger, the building system’s trend log | Yours | Never | Someone in finance or IT approves a read-only connection, once | An IT approval, not a skill | Up to Two parties agree (V1) | Connecting more of them does not make them somebody else’s records. |
| R3 Sensors | A meter, a weighbridge, a flow gauge, a probe | Yours, a counterparty’s or a third party’s | Sometimes | Read it or let it report itself; if it prints a ticket, keep the ticket | Installation once, if there is no meter yet | Up to Measured (V2) | Up to V2 alone, and it needs somebody else to reach V3. |
| R4 Site vision | A camera already on the gate, the yard or the bay | Yours or a counterparty’s | Never | Collect 25 pairs of what the camera counted against what the delivery note said | No specialist | Up to Measured (V2) | Your cameras are your party however many you have, and video gives activity data, never emissions. |
| R5a LiDAR Not built | A scan of a stockpile, bay or slab | Yours or a third party’s | Sometimes | Walk the scanner round or fly it, about twenty minutes | A surveyor or trained operator | None: no figure binds to it | It would buy a narrower band, no independence. |
| R5b Satellite | Imagery of a site from orbit | Nobody’s side | A second party by construction, with no relationship to spend | Nothing on site; give the coordinates and period once | No specialist | Up to Two parties agree (V1) | Limited by resolution, revisit and cloud, and it never sees inside a building or a silo. |
| R6 Laboratory | A sample is taken and a property reported | Third party | Only when a second party took the sample | Fill the bottle, note the time, seal it, hand it over | An accredited laboratory and a trained sampler | Up to Measured and confirmed (V3) | Your own sample at the most independent laboratory is still your own, and a result past its holding window is invalid, not late. |
| R7 Fiscal | An invoice as a tax authority registered it | The tax authority | Proves registration only | Nothing; finance already does it | No specialist | Moves no tier or band | It never proves a quantity, and it moves no tier or band. Not switched on yet |
What should we add next?
